00Hints & Secrets
Speedrun, By the Level
A look into a slightly outdated speedrun demonstration. Great for anyone looking to dip their toes into Killer7 speedrunning.
About the Speedrun
The Killer7 speedrun is fairly light on glitches and sequence breaking. Important details to look out for are where blood is gained and where it is spent. The "blood route" is a very important aspect of the speedrun alongside the actual route that you take through each level. If followed properly, you should have at least enough blood to do everything necessary.
Another important part of the speedrun is the "Instant Enter" which describes activating room-change junctions at the earliest possible moment. Because of a built-in delay on junction activation attached to the mouse controls, the best times possible in a Killer7 speedrun can only be achieved while playing on a controller for the majority of the game. Killer7 on PC conveniently allows you to swap between controller and mouse control schemes seamlessly which allows the mouse to be used in the few sections of the game where mouse control happens to be better. Keep an eye out for the in-game cursor to see when mouse controls are used.
Important details to take note of:
-This demonstration features the "English" language option and "Normal" difficulty option. Changing these settings will result in major and minor differences in the speedrun depending on what is changed and how it is changed.
-There is a built-in "Quickturn" ability that is never described in-game. It gets heavy use in the speedrun for dealing with enemies and occasionally for travel. To perform a Quickturn, PRESS TURN while HOLDING RUN.
-Lock-on is a technique described in the game's tutorial, but is often forgotten in favor of manual aiming. It is done by pressing the TURN button while aiming. Lock-on is used in the speedrun mostly for targeting and killing Micro Smiles, but also for killing the occasional other enemy. Beware that Lock-On will always target the enemy nearest to you even if they aren't in front of you, so take note of where it is and isn't used in the speedrun by its perfectly straight jump onto a nearby Smile and pay special attention to where the player is standing when it is used.
-Button Mashing is sometimes important. When using the TV in Harman's Room and converting Thick Blood into Serum for upgrades, mashing any inputs on the controller will cause the process to speed up. Whatever you can do that is the fastest will get you the best results. My own method is to mash all face and shoulder buttons with my right hand and rapidly circle the D-Pad and mash the shoulder buttons with my left. The speed difference can be see in the "Encounter part 1" video. Mashing is also useful when getting hit. Each character has their own level of stun taken when hit, but mashing buttons during the hit will make them recover slightly faster. This can both speed up intentional damage and allow you to recover from mistakes that may otherwise be worse.
Angel
Notes:
- Time begins from the title screen as "New Game" is selected.
Sunset, part 1
Sunset, part 2
Notes:
- The dice rolling puzzle is random. I have seen it take anywhere from 0 to 30 rolls, but it usually succeeds by the 8th roll.
- The Hanafuda puzzle is not solved by picking the proper number, but by properly matching animal and background decoration. The numbers are randomized.
- Dying as Coyote in the basement is intentional. It is a time-save unique to the PC version of Killer7 due to its improved loading time. It is important that Coyote is the one who dies because he has the fastest death animation.
Cloudman
Encounter, part 1
Notes:
- For this demonstration Mask has been pre-upgraded, but in a normal speedrun he would be upgraded at the TV at timestamp 13:15 using the serum processed there. At this point 1000dl of Thick Blood should be converted to serum, it should be first spent on Mask's Power until is can no longer be spent followed by Mask's Range until it can no longer be spent. Any leftovers need not be spent.
- Despite the difference in graphics, all of Mask's shots share the same splash size based on his Range stat.
Encounter, part 2
Notes:
- Shooting Bombhead Smile in the head-shell causes it to explode and kill other nearby Smiles. This can be seen at timestamp 2:02 in the demonstration and can also be used at timestamp 1:17 to surpass the speed of the demonstration.
- The pigeon behavior at the fight with Curtis is random. Assuming that no mistakes are made, the pigeon can fake-fly 0 to 9 times across the entire fight.
Alter Ego
Notes:
- The Duplicator Smile in this level is the only one in the game that requires Dan's Collateral Shot ability.
- Laser Smiles will never fire if they are not scanned. Once they are scanned they will always fire whether they can see you or not. Once they fire, the will always self-destruct.
Smile, part 1
Smile, part 2
Notes:
- The scan used at timestamp 2:32 is adjusted to specifically hit the Camellia Smile, but miss the Duplicator Smile.
- After Greg Nightmare's pants are removed he must come to a complete stop before his weakpoint can be hit. If you fire too early you will encounter his invulnerability and your shot will miss.
- I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for all of the cutscenes skipped during the speedrun.
Smile, part 3
Lion
Notes:
- Choosing to kill or not kill Matsuken does not change the speedrun.
- Time ends when the final shot is landed on Kun Lan in Shanghai.
